Have you advertised your online business in print?

I managed to get a small story about my business in a local newspaper and the rush of traffic it got me was phenomenal.  I've thought of running some sort of inexpensive classified ad campaign.  Has anyone tried this and can tell of their experience doing this?  I'd like to have an idea if it would be effective before spending money in that direction.

Try your local Newspaper for an 'Advertorial'

This is a cross between a conventional advert and an editorial.

The trick is to say you will make an 'offer' to the papers readership......lets say for example 'First 5 readers to respond get a 50% discount'
If youre product or service is fairly desirable you should get knocked over in the rush, and all subsequent enquiries are of course at full price [or whatever you think suitable]

The Newspaper will like the added value it offers their readers, and you should be able to secure a substantial reduction on the normal price of a display advert.

Best size to ask for is half a page.
They will help with copywriting if youre not too handy at this aspect.

I would say that if you are going to advertise for the first time, then go for a half page advertisement. Continuously for one or two months do this. So that it will get registered in the thoughts of clients. They will surely remember your brand and office name. So in need, will definitely try your product. So this is a good way to expand your business.

I have utilized both methods. I have received business both ways so I think if done right both can work!

News stories are really the best type of adverstisement that you can get.  You have an unbiased person, the reporter, telling viewers about what you do.  You are so fortunate that this happened.  What kind of business do you have?
